Blood Sugar & Metabolic Health

When your blood sugar is out of balance, it can affect far more than just your weight.

Blood sugar regulation plays an important role in your energy, concentration, mood, sleep and long-term health, yet many people don’t realise that frequent energy crashes, sugar cravings or difficulty losing weight may be signs that their body is struggling to maintain healthy blood sugar balance.

Does this sound familiar?

You may recognise yourself if you:

  • Feel tired or sleepy after eating

  • Experience afternoon energy crashes

  • Crave sugary foods or carbohydrates throughout the day day

  • Feel shaky, irritable or light-headed if you go too long without eating

  • Find it difficult to lose weight despite your efforts

  • Notice your concentration or mood changes when you are hungry

  • Wake during the night feeling hungry or restless

  • Have been told your blood sugar, insulin or cholesterol is elevated or borderline.

These symptoms don’t automatically mean your blood sugar is out of balance but they are worth investigating.

Understanding Blood Sugar

Your body works hard to keep blood glucose within a healthy range. When this balance is disrupted, it can influence many aspects of your health - not just your weight.

Blood sugar regulation is closely linked with energy production, appetite, hormone function and long-term metabolic health.

While occasional fluctuations are normal, ongoing changes in blood sugar regulation may contribute to symptoms such as fatigue, poor concentration and increased hunger.

Why It Might Be Happening

Blood sugar regulation is influenced by many factors including:

  • Dietary patterns

  • Meal timing

  • Chronic stress

  • Poor sleep

  • Physical activity

  • Muscle mass

  • Hormonal changes

  • Genetics

  • Nutrient status

  • Overall metabolic health

Rather than assuming there is one cause, it is important to investigate the factors that may be contributing to you individual symptoms

Normal pathology doesn’t always mean optimal health. Even when blood glucose is reported within the laboratory reference range there may be other markers that provide useful information about metabolic health. Looking at your health history, symptoms and pathology together often gives a more complete picture than relying a single result alone.

My Approach

If you are experiencing energy crashes, stronger hunger, cravings, shakiness, irritability or feeling like you need to eat regularly to function, blood sugar regulation is worth looking at.

Depending on your circumstances, this may include:

  • A comprehensive health and lifestyle assessment looking at your symptoms, meal patterns, hunger and cravings, energy fluctuations, exercise, sleep, stress and health history.

  • Review of pathology through a nutritional medicine lens including glucose and insulin regulation markers and other results relevant to your individual presentation.

  • Nutritional assessment looking at the composition and timing of your meals, protein and fibre intake, carbohydrate choices and overall dietary adequacy.

  • Assessment of factors that may influence blood sugar regulation, including meal timing, physical activity, sleep and chronic stress.

  • Identification of nutritional and lifestyle factors that may be contributing to blood sugar fluctuations and energy changes.

  • Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) where appropriate, to provide additional information about mineral patterns that may be relevant to your broader health picture.

  • Nutrigenomic testing where appropriate, where genetic information may add another layer to understanding individual differences in nutrient and carbohydrate metabolism.

  • Personalised nutrition, lifestyle and supplement recommendations based on your individual findings and within my scope of practice.

  • Ongoing support, reviews and retesting to assess how your energy, hunger, symptoms and dietary patterns are changing.

It is important to understand how your eating patterns, lifestyle and physiology may be affecting your blood sugar and energy throughout the day.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my blood sugar could be affecting my health?

Changes in blood sugar don't always cause obvious symptoms, and not everyone experiences them in the same way. Some people notice energy crashes, increased hunger, sugar cravings, difficulty concentrating or feeling shaky if meals are delayed. Others may find they're gaining weight more easily than they used to, particularly around the abdomen, or have been told they have pre-diabetes, insulin resistance or elevated blood glucose levels.

Because these signs can have many possible causes, it's important not to make assumptions. Understanding your health history, symptoms and, where appropriate, pathology results can help build a clearer picture of your metabolic health.

Can nutrition help support healthy blood sugar?

Yes. Nutrition is one of several lifestyle factors that can support healthy blood sugar regulation as part of an overall healthy lifestyle.

Meal composition, meal timing, physical activity, sleep, stress and body composition can all influence blood sugar regulation. Rather than recommending a one-size-fits-all approach, I develop personalised nutrition and lifestyle strategies based on your individual health history, symptoms and goals.

What's the difference between blood sugar imbalance and insulin resistance?

Blood sugar refers to the amount of glucose circulating in your bloodstream at any given time. Insulin resistance occurs when the body's cells become less responsive to insulin, making it more difficult to regulate blood glucose effectively.

Not everyone with changes in blood sugar has insulin resistance, and not everyone with insulin resistance experiences obvious symptoms. Where appropriate, reviewing pathology alongside your health history and clinical assessment can help provide a better understanding of your metabolic health. Recommendations for pathology testing are always based on your individual circumstances and any previous investigations you may already have completed.
